What Detailing Products Do I Need for My Car?

Most people expect a long, expensive list when they ask this question.

They think they need a pressure washer, multiple buckets, fancy machines, and a shelf full of different bottles just to wash their vehicle properly. I get it. The industry makes it look that way.

The truth is much simpler.

After detailing quite a few vehicles in Red Deer, I can tell you this with complete confidence: you don’t need nearly as much as you think. With just a few quality products and a straightforward process, you can clean your car as well as the pros — whether you’re washing it in your driveway, garage, or even a parking lot.

My “This Can’t Possibly Work” Moment

I’ll be honest with you. When I first started using a rinseless wash, I was skeptical. I thought there was no way one product could deliver the kind of results I was looking for, especially on heavily soiled vehicles.

I was wrong.

After using it on many different cars and trucks — from daily drivers covered in prairie dust to family vehicles that hadn’t been properly cleaned in years — I became a believer. Rinseless is one of the G.O.A.Ts. It’s efficient, effective, and surprisingly versatile.

I’ve had clients look at their vehicle afterward and say, “Oh wow! This looks amazing for such an inexpensive product!” Then I tell them I essentially used just one product to clean the whole vehicle. The look on their face is always priceless.

The Simple Process That Actually Works

You don’t need to overthink this.

For a rinseless wash, the process is straightforward:

  • Chemical

  • Rinse

  • Chemical

  • Agitate

  • Dry

That’s it.

The dilution ratio stays the same (256:1) whether the vehicle is lightly or heavily soiled. You can apply it with a Legacy Sponge, a Perfectly Safe Brush, or a microfiber wash mitt. Because the product also acts as a drying aid, once you’ve agitated the surface you can simply dry it with your towel of choice.

No pressure washer required (though it does make things faster). Just quality products and the right process.

How to Choose Products Without Getting Overwhelmed

There are so many brands and products on the market today that it’s easy to feel lost. My advice is to start by watching YouTube reviews from trusted sources. Ask yourself:

  • Is the reviewer credible?

  • Has the brand been around for a while or is it just hype?

  • Does the manufacturer provide helpful videos and instructions?

Two resources I personally recommend without hesitation are DIY Detail and Pan the Organizer.

DIY Detail focuses on making products that genuinely work, are easy to use, and are priced fairly. They’re not trying to sell you a new bottle for every tiny task. Pan the Organizer is an absolute gem — over 1,200 videos full of honest reviews, tutorials, and education. Both of them respond to comments and clearly care about helping people.

They’ve set the standard for what I expect from any brand.

What We’ll Soon Be Carrying at Primitive Notions

I’m excited to share that we will soon be selling detailing products both in-store and online.

We plan to carefully curate and carry only the products that we have personally tested and used extensively. Our goal is to make sure that when you buy something from us, you can trust that it actually works and is worth your money.

DIY Detail will be one of the first lines we carry, and I’m especially happy about that.

One of the best parts about this is you’ll be able to try before you buy. Simply rent The Detail Lounge (my professional bay), test the products for yourself in a real-world setting, and see how they perform before purchasing anything.

The Part Most People Miss

Here’s what I really want you to take away from this.

Detailing shouldn’t feel like a burdensome chore. When you have the right products and a simple process, it becomes empowering and even therapeutic. There’s something satisfying about stepping back and seeing your vehicle looking sharp — knowing you did it yourself.

That feeling is hard to beat.
